MATCHA Too Good To Ignore

You may have read about the great health benefits of drinking green tea—How about increasing those benefits MANY, MANY TIMES OVER? Introducing…Matcha Tea. I was recently asked to sample an organic matcha tea and I readily agreed, looking forward to the extra incentive this gave me to make it a part of my daily routine. Matcha tea is a high-quality green tea powder that contains 137 times the amount of ECGC (one of the most powerful antioxidants) compared to a conventional cup of brewed green tea. The growing process includes keeping the tea plants covered during the later stages, which adds to the brilliant green color of Matcha powder (think chlorophyll). The entire tea leaves are harvested and then stone-ground to a fine powder. (Typical brewed tea is made from steeping the cut tea leaves in hot water, thus imparting some of the goodness of the tea leaves).

bowl whiskThe Japanese use this fine, emerald-green matcha tea powder in their tea ceremonies, mixing 1 teaspoon into 1/3 cup hot (not boiling) water and stirring briskly with a bamboo whisk, called a ‘chasen’. The flavor is a bit ‘grassy’ and very fresh.  And although I would love to experience a Japanese tea ceremony, I honestly have found it easier to add the powder to my daily smoothie. One simple step…that can make such a positive difference in our health…it is now part of my daily routine.

Quality is important when purchasing matcha tea. Look for the organic seal for best quality. The processing of the tea leaves should be one of steaming, not roasting or pan-frying (as is done with other types of teas).
