A Fancy Name for a Runny Nose

A reader recently asked me for information natural replacements for ‘chronic rhinitis’ (healthy alternatives for prescription nasal sprays). What on earth is chronic rhinitis? It’s a fancy name for having a runny nose on a regular basis possibly with nasal congestion and post nasal drip as a result of inflamed tissues. There’s an even longer term ‘chronic rhinosinusitis’ which also includes sinus congestion and pain. There are many options—and as you read through the list, you will notice that these options address not only the area of inflammation, rather they promote improved overall health—that’s our Big Goal in scenarios like this. And…as an added benefit, there are no ‘rebound’ effects from the options below, unlike many prescription products.

  • Neti pots–>use with distilled water (in France, you can purchase spray cans filled with saline with a nozzle to direct the spray into each nostril—a Neti pot on steroids!)
  • Homeopathic remedies specifically formulated for inflammation of nasal & sinus passages and associated cough
  • Acupuncture has been found to be helpful in clearing rhinitis
  • Herbs: Butterbar (antihistamine action without drowsiness)—Grapeseed extract (antihistamine action)—Stinging Nettle (antihistamine action)
  • Nutritional Options:  Reishi mushroom (antihistamine action and immune support)—Vitamin C (antihistamine action)—Bromelain (helps decrease inflammation and break up mucus)—Quercetin (helps decrease inflammation)—N-acetylcysteine (NAC) (helps break up mucus)
  • 8-10 glasses of filtered water daily (helps keep secretions thin)
  • 8-10 servings of vegetables & fruit daily (helps decrease inflammation & support overall health)
  • Cut back on dairy & wheat products (which tend to promote mucus production) as well as processed foods (which tend to promote inflammation and not support nutrition in a positive way)
  • High quality air filter in the home, especially sleeping area (with HEPA filter)

There you go—may you breathe easier & more freely—on your way to ever-improved health!  Thanks for reading—please share with others who may be interested…
